Radiation protection (TEMPEST)

When processing information with electronic devices, in addition to interference radiation, plain text information can also be emitted, which can be received and evaluated by unauthorized persons, thus leading to a loss of confidentiality.

Low-emission or emission-proof rooms refer to the structural reinforcement (shielding) of a room to prevent the spread of compromising emissions to the outside. These rooms prevent high-frequency emissions from computers, printers, and connected peripheral devices. Compromising radiation must be distinguished from electromagnetic compatibility, which only concerns the mutual influence of devices through electromagnetic fields. The limits for electromagnetic compatibility are generally not sufficient to prevent compromising radiation.

Due to the almost inexhaustible variety of rooms—including windows, built-in wet rooms, and telecommunications equipment that must function without interference in the relevant areas—the room shielding system is particularly suitable for these applications.

Architectural room screening

The ARCtec®-flex shielding system is mainly used in rooms that are subject to the zone model (further information can be found on the BSI website). This is a shielding system in which all components are integrated into the existing room architecture so that the natural atmosphere of a room is preserved. In addition to surface shielding, all components such as windows, doors, ventilation, pipes, etc., are provided with appropriate shielding. This shielding is barely noticeable to the untrained eye. Architects and planners retain the greatest possible creative freedom.
Surface shielding is usually achieved with 0.2 mm thick copper foil. The shielding system can be finished with all conventional floor and wall coverings, for example. Depending on requirements, air conditioning, electrical installations, and media technology can also be integrated. Detailed information on all components of such a system can be found in the data sheets for the ARCtec®-flex system. Architectural room shielding systems can achieve guaranteed shielding attenuation values of >80 dB up to 10 GHz (according to IEEE 299). These systems can be integrated into both new buildings and existing rooms.

Technical shielding

Shielded cabins made of copper or steel sheet modules are used to meet the highest requirements for security and electromagnetic shielding attenuation. This guarantees shielding attenuation values of > 100 dB.

The architectural design options are significantly limited in this case. These cabins are implemented as room-in-room systems; window solutions are limited. The selection of doors, wall coverings, and floor coverings is also limited.

Such systems are used in particular in high-security zones in the public sector. To protect spoken words, acoustic insulation and a special film are also installed on the windows to protect against laser microphones.
